The second visit of Ecoflow project took place in the mountainous areas of Acheloos river the week 30/09/2013 – 5/10/2013.

The sites are: Tripotamo, Upstream of Mesochora Dam, Downstream of Mesochora Dam  (Korifi Bridge), Drosochori Bridge.

The main purposes of this visit was to map the habitats of the river with the help of topographic equipment and to be trained in the observation of fishes for the estimation of the habitat simulation curves. The habitat mapping is a necessary procedure for the hydraulic simulations that will be used in a later step for the assessment of the ecological flow. During the visit water level gauging stations were installed and field measurements together with water and substrate samples were collected for chemical analysis in the laboratories of HCMR and NKUA.

The method in sort…

The ECOFLOW methodology for the assessment of ecological flow is based on the observation of fish species “preferences” in relation to four parameters (depth, velocity, substrate and cover) at microhabitat scale.

For this the following are required:

ü  Topographical Surveying of river sections/ hydromorphology

ü  Good knowledge of mesohabitat types

ü  Field measurements for the parameters of depth, velocity, substrate and cover
