Pilot implementation of the WFD in a river basin with temporary flow– Assessment of the status of Anapodaris River using biological and chemical criteria.

The aim of this project was the pilot implementation of the WFD focusing on the ecological and chemical status assessment of a river basin with intermittent flow regime and intensive cultivation.

For the first time in Greece, the status of a typical, intensively cultivated, intermittent Mediterranean river basin in Crete (Anapodaris River) was assessed. For that purpose, hydromorphological, chemical-physicochemical, biological and chemical criteria were applied. In light of the temporal hydrological regime and anthropogenic pressures, sediment chemical quality elements were considered for the assessment of the chemical status of the river.
