  • Dr. George Papaioannou is a registered professional Forest Engineer in Greece and is member of the Geotechnical Chamber of Greece. He was awarded a BSc from the Forest and Water Engineering Sector, Department of Forestry and Management of the Environment and Natural Resources, Democritus University of Thrace, Greece in 2006, and a MSc in Sustainable Management of the Environment and Natural Resources with specialization at the sector of Sustainable Management of Mountainous Watersheds with Intelligent Information Systems and GIS in 2008 from Democritus University of Thrace. Dr. Papaioannou attained his PhD in Hydrology and water resources in 2017 from University of Thessaly. During the period 2009-2018, he worked as a freelance forest engineer conducting hydrological, hydraulic and water resource management studies (e.g. in a part of the study design “River basin management plan of the water districts of Thessaly, Epirus and Western Sterea Hellas, Greece”, in a part of the study design “Management Plans of Flood Risks for River Basins in Thessaly and Epirus Regions, Greece”). Since March 2018, he is a research associate at the Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters, HCMR.He has participated as teaching assistant at the course of “Hydrology” (Undergraduate Program, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Thessaly), at the course “Surface and groundwater hydrological systems modelling”  (Postgraduate Program – Applied Mechanics and Systems Modelling and Simulation, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Thessaly) and at the courses “Floods”, “Hydrohazard Forecasting”, “GIS and Remote Sensing Applications in Hydrohazards Analysis” and “Planning for HydroHazard Prevention and Management” (Common Greek-French Postgraduate Program – Management of Hydrometeorological Hazards – Hydrohasards, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Thessaly).His research interests include: a) analysis, modelling, and forecasting of water recourses, b) water resources management, c) applications of GIS, d) uncertainty analysis in hydrology, e) hydrological analysis and control of watersheds, f) flood inundation modelling and mapping, and g) Hydraulic-hydrodynamic modelling applications. Dr. Papaioannou is the author and co-author of six (6) scientific articles in refereed journals and thirty (30) scientific articles in conference proceedings.
