Identification and characterization of the small scale driftnets fisheries in Mediterranean. The DRIFTMED project was carried out under the umbrella of MAREA group of projects aiming to provide scientific advice to the EC regarding fisheries issues in the Mediterranean.

The main objective of the project was to collect and analyze the technical specifications of the small driftnets (<2.5 km) used today by some Mediterranean countries (mainly Italy and France). This way the EC will have a clear view of the state of this fisheries sector and the technology used for future policy making since driftnets in general are a banned gear.

In addition the project aimed to the description of the fleet and fishery of this métier so that alternatives could be proposed and a complete ban of the gear can be enforced.
