This handbook is aiming to highlight the importance of sound water resources management in our country’s islands, as well as to create and foster a new water consciousness and water culture emphasizing on local solutions, conservation and informed citizen engagement in decision-making on collective interest. Modern approaches, both at local and international level, underline the need for sustainable management of this finite common good, reduction of demand and consumption, ensure protection from pollution, exploitation of alternative water sources while at the same time stress the need for active participation of involved bodies in a collective and coordinated effort to sustainably manage the most valuable natural resource, aiming to meet the needs, of both, modern societies and ecosystems.
