Assessing the interaction between SSF and marine megafauna in Greece

The project focuses on the study of fisheries and wildlife issues, through this project, will fill this serious gap that exists in estimating the economic loss of small scale fishers due to gear damage and catch loss by marine mammals.

The project results will be directly utilised in the on-going MOFI Initiative, as they will form the basis for quantifying the amount of the financial compensation, and will allow to effectively continue the ongoing targeted advocacy actions of WWF Greece with the competent national authorities (Ministry of Rural Development and Food) in the process of the development and implementation of the fair national compensation system for SSF in Greece.
Initially effort was made to assess “hot-spots” of interactions between small-scale fisheries and marine megafauna, through targeted interviews with fishers and the analysis of the HCMR strandings database.

At a next step the project specialized on the study of fisheries and wildlife issues, filling the serious gap that exists in estimating the economic loss of small scale fishers due to gear damage and catch loss by marine mammals.
