Implications of the implementation of the landing obligations provisions in small pelagic fisheries in the Mediterranean Sea.The European Commission has decided the gradual banning of fisheries discards by imposing obligation for landing of unwanted catch as key point of the reform of the Common Fishery Policy.
The current projects aims at the study of discards in fisheries targeting small pelagic fish. The project includes collection of information from published papers and technical reports, analysis of DCF data and collection of information from stakeholders with the use of questionnaires in order to
(a) describe the characteristics of the fisheries and the fishing fleets,
(b) estimate discards quantities and ratios and
(c) explore if these fisheries fulfill the criteria for the “de minimis” exemption from the landing obligation.
