The institute personnel contributed to consulting services for the application of the European Union Water Framework Directive on Cyprus. Field work in 2009 and 2010 set the groundwork for an inventory of wetland areas on the island. This work was funded by a project awarded to G. Karavokyris and Associate Consultant Engineers SA and P.S. Kaimaki (consultants based in Athens) by the Water Development Department of Cyprus.
Members of the Institute of Inland Waters and the Institute of Oceanography worked with the Water Development Department (Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment) to promote aspects of application of articles 11, 13 and 15 of the European Union Water Framework Directive on Cyprus. This work involved the first River Basin Management Pre-plan (Contract TAY-WDD 97/2007) for the Republic of Cyprus.
Institute member’s research included a systematic survey of river and lake water bodies in the Republic with many field excursions and cooperation with many stakeholder groups and local scientists. Field excursions on the island in 2009 and 2010 set the groundwork for an inventory of wetland areas across Cyprus. No such inventory existed and wetland identification and delineation methods were tested and adapted to the unique xero-thermic conditions of this Eastern Mediterranean Island.
Several scientists and a university student cooperated in this wetland inventory; and database development (including a remote sensing application) continued after the end of the specific contract.
