Fish are important biotic elements for assessing the state of running waters.

Two ΙΜΒRIW teams are currently working on fish sampling in rivers throughout Greece for the spring season survey of the Water Framework Directive application. Each team has three to four members and is using electrofishing equipment and a standardized method to sample specific river stretches. Fish species, fish numbers, and fish size-class lengths for each specimen are measured and the fishes are released alive at the sampling site. Aspects of water quality, habitat condition and hydromorphology are also recorded at each site.
