Empowering the legacy of Mediterranean Partners: Scaling up co-managed and financially sustainable No-Take Zones/Marine Protected Areas

The program aspires to build on past successful experiences in fisheries co-management and to develop direct partnerships with coastal communities and small-scale fishermen. The project aims to create new NTZ-No Take Zones and will offer a range of solutions to improve the management and governance of existing NTZ and Marine Protected Areas (MPA-MPA-Marine Protected Areas). Each MPA / NTZ will present specific approaches and tools for addressing recurring governance, planning, funding, and law enforcement issues.
HCMR will focus on Gyaros island MPA, following the “GyarosMPA” project with a series of experimental sampling to monitor the status of the MPA.
