Conservation Actions for Supporting the Threatened freshwater fish of EvrOtas River – CASTOR Project
The proposed project aims to restore ecological integrity and promote sustainable water management practices in the river basin, contributing to the overall conservation of Mediterranean freshwater ecosystems, through targeted habitat restoration actions, in situ population movements and ex situ breeding, alien species control, as well as awareness-raising actions.
The primary objective of CASTOR is to strengthen the conservation status and ensure the long-term survival of two critically endangered endemic freshwater species, Pelasgus laconicus and Squalius keadicus, in the Evrotas River Basin.
CASTOR’s activities are designed to address the most serious threats to species, such as habitat fragmentation, pollution, water scarcity and competition from alien species:
- Species Movements and Population Enhancement
- Habitat Restoration and Connectivity Improvement
- Alien Species Control and Habitat Enhancement
- Stakeholder Engagement and Public Awareness
- Monitoring and Evaluation
