Irida Maina is a fisheries scientist and postdoctoral researcher at the IMBRIW/HCMR. She is a specialist in geoinformatics and spatial modelling. More specifically, she has research interests and experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), R (functions, loops, r-tools development), databases, webGIS (geoserver, geonetwork), species distribution modeling, spatially explicit bio-economic modeling, geostatistics, multi-criteria decision analysis, time-series analysis, etc.
Her work focuses on identifying important fishing grounds, areas of high bycatch and exploring the economic trade-offs of fisheries management measures. Her work also includes the development of an integrated framework aiming to the use of onboard tracking systems for exploring fishing effortand behaviour in space and time, fishing impact on the seabed as well as fleet interactions with environmental and economic factors. She has also contributed to the development of a methodological approach, that integrates spatial data and multiple decision criteria which aims to predict fishing effortfor small-scale fishing vessels.
She has contributed in several working groups of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) and International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).
She has been involved in studies focusing on Marine Spatial Planning and Ecosystem- based fisheries management and contributed in 23 articles in international peer-reviewed scientific journals and in more than 35 other publications (i.e., technical reports, conference proceedings)
Since 2011, she works as a research assistant in the Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters (IMBRIW) in the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) and she has participated in over than 20 European and National research projects (e.g. SEAwise, Med&BS RDBFIS, Med&BS RDBFIS II, Qualitrain, ECOAST,MARISCA, PROTOMEDEA,MINOW, BENTHIS, ECODISC, PERSEUS,STOCKMED). She has also coordinated certain tasks of the research projects Med_Units and i4Sea.
