The aim of the project was to investigate the biology, ecology and spatial distribution of the endangered fish species Pungitius hellenicus, as well as to assess the types and degree of the risks it confronts, and finally to establish actions for the protection and restoration of the species. Before the initiation of the research, Pungitius hellenicus was regarded as a critically endangered species whose geographic distirbution was limited to the springs of Agia Paraskevi (near Lamia ).

The investigation showed that the species also exists in other areas of the Sperchios basin. One of the main protection actions proposed was to maintain unintact some areas near the region Moschochoriou which meet the ecological requirements of the species (cold water, low flow, rich aquatic vegetation).
