  • BSc in Natural Resources Management & Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural University of Athens (1997-2002)
  • MSc in Water Resources Science and Technology, National Technical University of Athens (2002-2004)
  • PhD in Hydrology, Water Resources and Nonpoint Source Water Pollution, School of Civil Engineering, National Technical University of Athens (2004-2010)
Dr. Yiannis Panagopoulos is a research associate at HCMR working for the Hellenic Integrated Marine-Inland waters Observing Forecasting and offshore Technology System (HIMIOFoTS) and the H2020 Collaborative lAnd Sea inTegration pLatform (COASTAL) projects. In his PhD he developed a Decision Support Tool with MATLAB programming and the SWAT Ecohydrologic model to optimize the cost-effectiveness of the application of multiple agricultural measures in reducing catchment’s nutrient water pollution. His expertise is in the fields of hydrology, water resources and integrated catchment modeling, with emphasis on the simulation of water/nutrient cycling, vegetation growth and agricultural practices for the design of sustainable river basin management, water restoration and climate change adaptation plans. As a postdoctoral research associate both in Greece and Iowa USA, he has worked within interdisciplinary research groups for many EU WFD-oriented research projects and US NSF and USDA projects, supporting participatory (stakeholder engagement) research activities. Recently, he coordinated the European Southern basins group and the Work Package on the ‘European matrix of stress and impact’ in the DG Research FP7-ENV-2013 MARS project, being also a member of the project steering group. He has published or co-authored several scientific articles in peer-review journals and international conferences and is a reviewer of several scientific journals, in topics of environmental management.
