Development, Evaluation and Implementation of a standardised Fish-based Assessment method for the Ecological Status of European Rivers.
FAME’s objective was to assist in the implementation the European Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) by developing, evaluating and implementing a fish-based assessment method for the ecological status of rivers. The development of the method was based on existing data from national monitoring programmes. Fish data from 17000 sites (5200 rivers) in 16 of the 25 eco-regions of Europe were utilised. Two different approaches for establishing reference conditions were tested: a type-specific spatially based approach, and a site-specific approach. 25 partner institutions from 12 EU countries contributed to the project.
