The project facilitates the implementation of the 2000/60 WFD for surface waters in Greece as it leads to an objective and comprehensive assessment of the water bodies’ status. The work to be carried out includes the following: sampling and analyses for biological (phytoplankton, benthic macroinvertebrates, phytobenthos), physicochemical, hydromorphological parameters, as well as for chemicals (Priority Substances) and other substances (Cd, Cu, Ni, Fe, Mn and others), in 82 coastal and 32 transitional stations in Greece.
Samples for chemical monitoring of coastal and transitional water bodies (priority substances and special pollutants) will be handed over to the General Chemical State Laboratory, while analyses of heavy metals will take place at HCMR.
The project includes also sampling and analyses for benthic macroinvertebrates, diatoms, physicochemical and hydromorphological parameters in 490 river water bodies in Greece, and a subset of these sampling stations for fish. Finally, it includes the classification of all samples from coastal, transitional and river Water Bodies for each quality element, based on available and tested relevant indices for Greece.
