Plastic pollution poses a major threat to the biodiversity of the Mediterranean, particularly in the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, where high concentrations of plastic waste are observed. Rivers act as primary pathways for transporting plastics from land to sea. Addressing the inflow of waste through rivers is a shared territorial challenge, which is reflected in recent efforts by the European Commission and the Barcelona Convention to develop harmonized approaches to tackle this issue.

The project entitled “Enhancing Cross-Border Cooperation for Riverine Plastic Litter Reduction in the Adriatic and Ionian Seas” (TETHYS4ADRION), aims to investigate the role of rivers in marine plastic pollution in the Adriatic and Ionian Seas and contribute to the development of mitigation strategies, ultimately aiming to reduce plastic waste inputs into the sea.

The project is funded by the Interreg IPA ADRION program and has a duration of 36 months.
