The project concerns the environmental monitoring of Lake Koumoundourou, in order to quantify its ecological quality status and the dominant threats.
A representative sampling network will be developed in which monthly water sampling, seasonal biological monitoring for phytoplankton, macroinvertebrates and macrophytes and one sediment sampling and analysis for heavy metals will occur.
The water samples will cover the entire extent and depths of the lake while the acquired measurements and chemical analyses will be imported in a specially designed geodatabase. Two automatic, telemetric monitoring stations will be installed in the lake and will provide continuous measurements of physicochemical parameters. Based on the monitoring results, a pollution risk assessment of the lake will be implemented as well as a series of measures for the management, restoration and recreation of the lake will be designed.
Moreover, environmental education and public awareness material will be developed through the project that will be disseminated in the project website and the Media.
